CARSON CITY — A certified public accountant is planning to challenge her boss in the next election.

Catherine Byrne of Carson City today announced plans to run for state controller against GOP incumbent Ron Knecht.

Byrne, a Democrat, has worked in the office for five years and before that, she was employed in the California university system.

She said she wants to refocus the office on its core mission of handling the accounting needs of the state.

Byrne said she has the endorsements of former state Controller Kim Wallin and former state Treasurer Kate Marshall.

Wallin said Byrne has the “experience and vision needed for the next state controller.”

The state controller also sits on the state Transportation Board and the state Board of Finance.
