Renewable energy ballot measure qualifies for Nevada ballot

CARSON CITY — Nevada voters will be asked this fall if the state should require renewable energy production to increase faster than the current pace.

Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announced that the Renewable Energy Promotion Initiative will be Question 6 on the November ballot.

She says Nevadans for a Clean Energy Future submitted more than the required 112,500 signatures from registered voters statewide.

Campaign chief Katie Robbins says the group submitted more than 133,000 valid signatures.

The measure would amend the state constitution to raise the Renewable Portfolio Standard for sources including solar, wind and geothermal from 20 percent today to 50 percent by 2030.

Robbins says the goal is to reduce dependence on pollution-emitting fossil fuels.

Current state law calls for the RPS to increase to 25 percent by 2025.
