Henderson Police say they have arrested a man in the death of an elderly woman found earlier this month in a burning apartment with apparent trauma to her head and face.

Vernon McClelland Jr., 29, was arrested without incident Tuesday in the 700 block of Center Street, police said.

He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of open murder, burglary while in possession of a gun, first-degree arson and possession of a gun by a prohibited person, police said.

The victim was discovered about 10:30 a.m. July 6 after a fire was reported at an apartment complex in the 500 block of East Lake Mead Parkway, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said.

The death was the fifth homicide investigated by Henderson Police this year.
