The Golden Knights have signed forward William Carrier to a two-year contract worth an average of $725,000 a year, the team announced today.
Carrier, 23, was a restricted free agent. The deal will keep the fourth-line winger in Las Vegas through the 2019-20 season.
Tallying only three points (one goal and two assists) in 37 games, Carrier had the lowest points per game of any player on the Golden Knights who played at least two games.
Used more for his physicality than his scoring ability, Carrier provided a bruising presence for the Golden Knights throughout the season and even more so in the playoffs. He delivered 113 hits, second among the team’s forwards, despite playing less than half the season.
Carrier averaged only 8:50 of ice time per game, the second-least amount of time on the team.
Of the Golden Knights’ regular contributors, only Alex Tuch (22) and Shea Theodore (22) were younger than Carrier.
His new deal is only slightly over the league minimum of $650,000 per year and allows Vegas to evaluate whether he has a long-term future with the club.
Following Carrier’s contract extension, the Golden Knights have $13,187,500 of remaining salary cap space, with Theodore and forward William Karlsson still restricted free agents. Karlsson’s arbitration hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4, but a deal could be reached any time before then.
