Group to offer free or reduced-price vaccines, sports physicals

Fri, Jul 27, 2018 (11:21 a.m.)

All high school athletes are required to take a physical before participating in a sport. And all students have to be up-to-date on their vaccines to attend school.

With a new academic year beginning Aug. 13, that means many families are scrambling for the required care. For those with limited means, getting a sports physical or meeting the immunization requirement comes with a challenge.

That’s where FirstMed Health and Wellness Centers and SilverSummit Healthplan hope to ease the burden. On Saturday and then again on Aug. 11, they will offer free and reduced-price sport physicals and immunizations.

Immunizations are available at no cost and on a first-come, first-served basis to Medicaid eligible, uninsured and underinsured school-age children and adolescents, according to the group. Additionally, free sports physicals will be provided to Medicaid eligible and uninsured school-age children and adolescents. For others, sports physicals are available for only $40.

“This is a great opportunity for parents to make sure their school-aged children are fully immunized before entering school and comply with Clark County school entry requirements,” said Pam Beal, Chief Operating Officer for FirstMed in a statement. “Vaccines are safe, effective and protect our communities from diseases.”

The Saturday event is from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at FirstMed Health Wellness Center at 3343 S. Eastern Avenue. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 11, the event will be at FirstMed Health and Wellness Center on 3940 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. in North Las Vegas.
