Nevada is implementing more safeguards and poll worker training after a half dozen voters cast ballots twice in June’s primary election.
Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske’s office said in a news release today that six voters who cast double ballots in the primary did not know they voted twice and will not be prosecuted.
Five of the six cast ballots during early voting and on Election Day. The other cast two ballots during early voting.
“We take voter fraud very seriously and as soon as the issue was brought to our attention, we launched a criminal investigation,” Cegavske said.
Clark County officials found 43 voters, including the six interviewed by Cegavske’s office, cast two ballots. The others were allowed to cast a second ballot after they told poll workers they thought their first ballot did not register, according to the news release.
The Secretary of State’s Office attributed the mistakes to connectivity issues and poll worker error. Jennifer Russell, a spokeswoman for the office, said the connectivity issues were due to e-pollbooks going offline and not properly updating.
More training and software upgrades are planned in preparation for the general election in November.
