After expanding its presence in Las Vegas in 2017, Mecum Auctions is back today with a motorcycle auction featuring about 600 bikes.
Last spring, Mecum added a second Las Vegas motorcycle event to its annual calendar, after holding one in January for several years. In October, the Wisconsin-based auction company held its first car auction in Las Vegas.
Both were successes. The June 2017 auction yielded $4.4 million in sales, with a sell-through rate of about 80 percent, setting the stage for this year’s event.
Held at South Point, the auction kicked off Thursday with a preview party featuring a number of motorcycle racing greats.
The main event gets underway today at 10 a.m., when bidding begins.
The auction features motorcycles of virtually every style — from motor scooters to full-on race bikes to choppers — spanning nearly 120 years. Older bikes include a 1899 De Dion-Bouton and a 1905 Iver Johnson — essentially bicycles fitted with a small engine and a fuel tank.
Bidder registration is $200, which includes admission for two. General admission tickets are available for $30, with children 12 and under admitted for free.
Doors open at 8 a.m. daily, and portions of the event will be broadcast from 1-7 p.m. Sunday on NBC Sports Network. A livestream of the auction will be presented at mecum.com.
