The installation of steel posts along the Las Vegas Strip to protect pedestrians from cars is set to resume with a new contractor.

The Clark County Commission on Wednesday is expected to approve a $3.9 million bid by Unicon LLC to install more than 600 bollards on the east side of the Strip between Spring Mountain Road and Tropicana Avenue and on the west side beginning at Sahara Avenue and stretching 1,500 feet south.

The bollards, installed between the street and sidewalk, are designed to withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling 50 mph.

If approved as recommended, work would start within 60 days, and Unicon would have 45 days to complete the project, county spokesman Dan Kulin said.

Muller Construction last year installed 800 bollards between Tropicana and Spring Mountain. Commissioners were scheduled earlier this year to approve the company to install more bollards but delayed awarding the contract after an employee wage dispute.

Muller submitted the lowest bid for the latest contract — $3.7 million — but the commission opted to go with Unicon, which was within a permitted 5 percent of the lowest bid.

The county plans to install in excess of 5,000 more bollards along the Strip by the end of the year, Kulin said.

The project is being funded through county hotel tax revenue.
