The heat will increasingly wallop the Las Vegas Valley this week. And on Thursday it will jeopardize a record high for the first day of summer only set a year ago.

So, if Tuesday’s 100-degree high felt uncomfortably toasty, valley residents should take note.

Wednesday will see a “significant” 8-degree jump from the previous day, while temperatures the next couple of days will flirt with 112 and 111 degrees, respectively, National Weather Service meteorologist John Adair said.

Thursday — when an excessive heat warning begins — will mark the first day of summer and the one-year anniversary of a record-shattering 114-degree high, Adair said, noting it may happen again.

As part of the warning, weather service officials are warning the public of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat strokes. Those most vulnerable are children, the elderly and those who spend significant time outside or have no air conditioning.

Each day from June 20 to June 24 last year saw a new record high, Adair said.

The high on Saturday — when the warning expires — is projected to reach 109 degrees, Adair said. The heat will taper down to normal summer conditions in the 105-degree range the following days, he added.
