The Las Vegas Lights played to a 1-1 draw Saturday at Cashman Field against the visiting Tulsa Roughnecks.
It was a game the Lights should have won, coach Isidro Sánchez indicated.
“Today, we had it, we smelled it and we dropped it — the opportunity (to win),” Sanchez said “Today was the clearest example that we have to take these opportunities.”
The Lights jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in front of its vocal Cinco de Mayo crowd of 7,777 fans on a Carlos Alvarez header into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Against a winless Tulsa squad, it appeared the Lights would cruise to a win. But they couldn’t again score.
“The first seven minutes, maybe the best seven minutes we’ve played all season,” Sánchez said. “We won the ball in the defensive side, created shots, crosses.
“Then, we lost our humility.”
Las Vegas’ Matt Thomas received a red card in the 72nd minute, meaning the Lights team played a man down the final 18 minutes.
The Lights did receive a point for their effort, improving to 2-1-4 with 10 points on the season. It was the sixth time in seven games the expansion team earned a point.
The Lights return to the pitch at 6 p.m. Friday at Colorado Springs.
