McCarran International Airport is adding 18 new machines to streamline the screening of carry-on items at its Terminal 1 gates over the next year. The project is expected to cost about $8 million.

Installation of the machines at the C gates begins in late August or early September and is expected to be completed in early October. Six security lanes at the D gates will be upgraded in early October, with a planned November finish date.

The machines are similar to those in use at Terminal 3.

A conveyor belt carries bins through the scanner and returns them, eliminating the labor of stacking and moving bins from the end of the line to the front of the line. The machines also automatically divert bins that may contain prohibited items to a separate conveyor belt, so other items can move along uninterrupted.

“Travelers are responding positively to the user-friendly nature of the automated screening lanes we have installed at Terminal 3,” airport spokeswoman Christine Crews said. “We’re looking forward to expanding this efficient security feature to all checkpoints throughout the airport as a means to improve customer service.”

The final phase will be installing the upgraded machines at the A/B gates checkpoint, which should happen early next year as part of a larger renovation.
