Letter to the editor:

Climate change merits attention

Thu, May 24, 2018 (2 a.m.)

Thanks for highlighting climate action in the May 12 edition of the Sun (“California to require solar power in home construction”).

The win-win story of rooftop solar demonstrates that aggressive action to reduce carbon emissions can boost jobs and the economy. Californians will save money on homeownership through reduced electric bills, while nourishing an industry that employs 86,000 people and reducing climate impacts.

A bipartisan organization called Citizens Climate Lobby promotes another win-win proposal to fight climate change. A market-based solution called Carbon Fee and Dividend begins to account for the environmental costs of burning coal, oil and gas.

Revenue from a gradually rising fee on carbon fuels would be given directly back to American households. Over 20 years, it would create an estimated 2.8 million jobs and prevent an estimated 230,000 premature deaths from poor air quality.
