Letter to the editor:

Troops deserve better treatment

Fri, Nov 16, 2018 (2 a.m.)

I often hear the president's supporters argue that he is bringing respect back to the United States. I see a petulant person still unable to rise to the demands of his position, a dilettante who appreciates the perks of his position but ignores the responsibilities.

His recent abuses of his role as commander in chief are revealing. The military is probably the most respected of our institutions. The president consistently fails to acknowledge their sacrifices both past and present. His disrespect for the military includes but is not limited to his assertions that he knows more than the generals, his decision to wrench service members away from their families for holidaysand his decision to forgo honoring U.S. Marines because it was raining.

In his two years in office, Donald Trump has never visited our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Both George W. Bush and Barack Obama did, even when our troops were dying in higher numbers.
