Las Vegas fire department enjoys a calm Thanksgiving

Mon, Nov 26, 2018 (3:17 p.m.)

This Thanksgiving was “probably the calmest” in the past 20 years for Las Vegas firefighters, officials said today.

There were no major fires in the city Thursday, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said. “It was a relatively quiet, typical day in the city,” a fire department news release said.

The department provided assistance to North Las Vegas and Clark County fire departments for two fires during the day, officials said.

There were 17 fire responses in the city, mostly outdoor fires sparked by barbecue cooking. There also was one vehicle fire, a dumpster fire and a brush fire, officials said. There were no indoor cooking-related fires that caused damage or displaced anyone, officials said.

There was one call for food burning in the oven. At first it was thought to be drippings from a turkey cooking in the oven, but it turned out to be a faulty heating element that started a fire, officials said. The blaze was out before firefighters arrived, officials said.

There was one instance of slightly elevated carbon monoxide levels in an apartment due to cooking, officials said. Firefighters opened windows to clear the gas, officials said.

“It was probably the calmest Thanksgiving holiday in the past 20 years,” the news release said.

Nationally, there are an average of three times more cooking fires on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year, officials said.

This is the fifth straight year there were no cooking-related fires in Las Vegas that caused significant damage to property or displaced anyone.

It was also a below-average day for emergency responses. There were 251 emergency responses on Thanksgiving, well below the average is 304, officials said.
