Man changed story in slaying of girlfriend, 17, police say

A man arrested in the slaying of his teenage girlfriend in North Las Vegas concocted two stories on how she ended up with a gunshot wound to her neck.

Both involved Seneca Dion Carey’s gun going off on accident while the couple sat in his car. Both were deemed lies by North Las Vegas Police, according to an arrest report.

The shooting occurred in front of her house in the 1100 block of Gary Carmena Avenue, near Bruce Street and East Azure Avenue, police said.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, police responded to MountainView Hospital in northwest Las Vegas where Carey, 21, had pulled up with a mortally wounded Indya Willis, the report said.

The body of the 17-year-old was sprawled out on the reclined front passenger’s seat, police said. Initially, Carey told detectives that as he’d looked down to roll a marijuana cigarette, she’d been waving his gun, which then went off.

Right before, he’d told Willis to stop, Carey told police.

When pressed about the unlikelihood — based on her body’s position — that Willis could’ve shot herself, Carey changed his testimony, according to the report.

In the second account, he was holding the gun in his right hand with his elbow resting on the center console, police said. Willis’ hand also was on the console and when she “slapped his hand the gun went off.”

The gun was slightly pointed to the right, he said. In either case, the shooting was accidental, he maintained.

According to Carey, he became scared and began driving around, looking for a hospital, the report said.

Because Carey didn’t immediately seek medical help, police believe the shooting was intentional.

MountainView is 12 to 15 miles from the shooting scene.
