The Cheyenne High basketball team has been defeated in each of the past two 3A state championship games. Last year, it lost in overtime.

This season, the Desert Shields return most of their key contributors. But the challenge is different: They have been realigned to the class 4A, meaning another trip to the state tournament will only be possible by besting perennial contenders such as Canyon Springs, Centennial and Faith Lutheran.

Cheyenne is led by seniors Damion Bonty and J.D. McCormick, who each averaged more than 10 points per game last season.
