Henderson Fire Department to start using aerial drones

The Henderson Fire Department plans to start using aerial drones for operations such as fire suppression, search and rescue, hazardous materials and emergency management, city officials said.

The drones can also be outfitted with technology to search for utility breaks and look for potential areas where road repairs are needed.

After soliciting bids from qualified companies in June to provide drone training to the fire department, Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Steel City Drones was selected for the $128,886 contract. The company will be awarded the contract at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“We are proud to be in a partnership that will lead the way on creating a safer community with small unmanned aerial systems,” said Laura Fucci, the city’s chief information officer, said in a statement. “Henderson supports cutting-edge technologies and we look forward to utilizing these new drones to assist our first responders.”
