Canyon Springs had a 23-point halftime lead tonight against host Mojave High and appeared to be headed for a comfortable victory. Then, Mojave cut the lead to just eight points.

Canyon Springs eventually prevailed 44-28 in a game coach Gus McNair labeled as “very sloppy.”

Quarterback Xavier DeLong passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another against his former team, including a pair of scoring strikes to Shakureon Dukes in the game’s initial five minutes. Javeion Davison also had a rushing touchdown.

“We had a great first half,” McNair said.

Gianni Blackwell and Martin Blake added touchdown runs for the Pioneers, who improved to 3-0 in the Northeast League.
