Cheyenne High football coach Patrick Ward has been around high school football for more than three decades.

Yet, Friday night was a first for the 65-year-old coach.

The Desert Shields trailed visiting Del Sol by 16 points with eight minutes to play before rallying for a 36-30 victory on the last play of the game.

Ray Brown caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Josh Rose as time expired for the winning points.

“Helluva a ball game. I am so proud of my kids,” Ward said. “You can’t count my kids out anymore.”

Majae Madison rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown for Cheyenne, Rose passed for four scores, and Brown and Mike Reed each had two touchdown receptions.

Cheyenne earns the No. 2 seed from the 3A Sunset League for next week’s playoffs against host Sunrise Mountain on Thursday. Seven of Cheyenne’s eight victories this season have come at home. Del Sol plays at Boulder City next Thursday to also open the playoffs.
