A small, single-engine airplane crashed south of Las Vegas Wednesday night, killing one occupant, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 9:20 p.m. near the Jean airport, about 30 miles from Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Metro Police confirmed the fatality, noting that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were taking over the investigation.

Northbound I-15 was shut down near the crash site in the desert and traffic was being diverted at state Route 161, Metro said via Twitter.

It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone else was injured.

“The origin of the aircraft and its destination are unknown at this time,” the fire department said late Wednesday.
