A motorist accused of being high on marijuana hit and killed a man and a woman who were jaywalking in front of a south valley resort Thursday night, according to Metro Police.

“We’re better than this Las Vegas,” Capt. Nick Farese said as he stood in front of the wrecked 2008 Ford Crown Victoria. “People’s lives are at stake. We need to stop these senseless deaths.”

The victims, residents of Meridian, Idaho, became the 94th and 95th traffic fatalities in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

Officers responded about 6:20 p.m. to Las Vegas Boulevard South, just south of Silverado Ranch Boulevard, police said.

A 67-year-old man died at the scene, and a woman, 68, was declared dead at University Medical Center, police said.

Davon D. Smith, 26, of Las Vegas, was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of DUI, according to jail logs.

Smith was headed south on Las Vegas Boulevard when he hit the victims, who were in the middle of the street, outside a designated crosswalk, near the South Point, police said.

Smith showed signs of impairment and was placed in handcuffs, police said. The crash remained under investigation.
