The Foothill Falcons’ offense was the star of the team’s 3-0 start this season, but Friday night they had to rely on a strong defense.

The Falcons smothered Canyon Springs to eke out a 17-14 win to improve to 4-0 on the season.

“The defense played really, really well,” Foothill coach Marty Redmond said. “We emphasized stopping the run and forcing them to pass and we did a great job of it. They have a fast, talented team.”

Canyon Springs mustered only 227 yards of total offense, and nearly half of it came on a 98-yard touchdown pass by Xavier DeLong in the first quarter. The Pioneers' only other touchdown came on a punt return.

Foothill trailed 14-10 at halftime but drove straight down the field on the opening drive of the second half, and Elijah Bryant punched in a four-yard touchdown run. That score would prove to be enough as the Falcons defense held Canyon scoreless in the second half.

“I feel good about this team,” Redmond said. “This was a big test for us. We knew this would be the best team we’ve played so far, and we played well.”

The Falcons face a struggling Eldorado team next Friday with a chance to enter league play undefeated.
