For the Chaparral and Eldorado high football programs, this is their Super Bowl. The “Cleat Game” will define the season.

The east Las Vegas schools have played for the Cleat — a bronzed cleat donated by NFL great Merlin Olsen — since the 1970s. While Chaparral has won the past three meetings, the game is typically close.

It’s one of the most revered rivalry games in Nevada, if not the most revered. The “Bone Game” between Las Vegas and Rancho has a longer history, but the results have been lopsided in Las Vegas’ favor the past two decades to steal some of the rivalry’s importance.

It’s not the lone game of interest.

The Northwest League opens play tonight, including rivals Centennial and Arbor View hooking up in a game where the crowd is expected to be standing-room only.

In nonleague games, undefeated Foothill travels to Canyon Springs in what many consider the week’s top game. Others believe that honor belongs to a battle between 3A contenders Cheyenne and host Moapa Valley, which could be a preview of the state championship game.

Two schools, Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran, will face stiff competition in California against top-20 ranked teams. Gorman plays at 10th-ranked De La Salle; Faith Lutheran is at No. 19 JSerra Catholic.
