LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

More info needed on judge

Sat, Sep 22, 2018 (2 a.m.)

After last week’s hearings before the Senate Judiciary, it is clear that my Senate delegation must vote against confirming Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Due to the 100,000 pages of his legal record still being hidden from review by the Trump administration, the Senate has not been given the opportunity to fully vet him. The Senate and the American people deserve to know how this judge would rule by examining all of his legal writings, particularly those from his time as staff secretary during the Bush administration.

We have a right to know how someone with a lifetime appointment would render decisions that greatly affect our lives. We should have some knowledge of how Kavanaugh would rule on issues such as health care coverage for those with pre-existing conditions or a woman’s right to choose to terminate her pregnancy.

I am also concerned about Kavanaugh’s belief that a sitting president cannot be legally held accountable for breaking the law. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., who supports Kavanaugh in spite of these concerns, should listen to his constituents and delay this vote until we can review Kavanaugh’s full record.
