The Las Vegas Sun was recognized for its live coverage of the Oct. 1 mass shooting in the Nevada Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, receiving a first-place award for best breaking news reporting.

Greenspun Media Group, publisher of the Sun, received 88 awards for multiple publications Saturday at the association’s annual awards ceremony, including 31 first-place honors. The Sunday magazine’s shooting coverage won for breaking news reporting and best news photo coverage in urban weeklies.

The Sunday ceased publication in January; its content merged with Las Vegas Weekly.

“We strive all year to bring the most credible, insightful and relevant news and information to Southern Nevada readers. To see our staff rewarded with this award for excellence in their craft is heartwarming and much appreciated,” said Brian Greenspun, owner, editor and publisher of the Sun.

GMG had two sweepstakes winners for the statewide awards: Elizabeth Brown, editor and creative director, as outstanding visual journalist for her design of Las Vegas Weekly; Ricardo Torres-Cortez as journalist of merit of urban weeklies for his work in The Sunday magazine.

Of Brown’s work, which also included first place for overall design of The Sunday in the urban weeklies category, judges said, “Powerful imagery. Phenomenal eye for presentation.”

Torres-Cortez’s profile on summer crime for The Sunday was picked as the best news feature for urban weeklies. He also won first place in the same class for community service, a story he wrote with colleague April Corbin on the value of hiring veterans.

“Not only were these stories well written, but they were well crafted,” a judge said of Torres-Cortez. “I didn’t feel like I had read pieces about evolving senseless gang violence or a mass shooting — but rather was taken on an emotional experience. This work is exceptional in every way.”
