Joe Tauiliili scored three touchdowns as Chaparral held on for a 33-19 home win over Spring Valley.
Tauiliili, a senior, put the Cowboys ahead early with a touchdown run in the first quarter. He added two more scores in the first half and finished the game with 76 yards on eight carries.
Chaparral dug in and held the line in the second half despite losing quarterback Damari White and running back Meshach Hawkins to injuries.
Cowboys head coach Don Willis pointed to his team’s burgeoning toughness as the main factor in pulling out the victory.
“Just resiliency,” Willis said. “I thought we lost control of the game a little bit, but we found a way to get it back. That’s something I know we could not have done last year. I told our kids we found a way to get our footing and take control of what’s going on.”
Chaparral improved to 2-0 with the win, while Spring Valley is now 0-1.
