Letter to the editor:

Impeach, but table the trial

Thu, Dec 12, 2019 (2 a.m.)

If the House of Representatives votes to impeach President Donald Trump, a trial in the Senate would become a platform for a political reality TV circus overseen by ring master Moscow Mitch McConnell.

Unlike impeachments of the past, this one will not only place the president on trial but also our democracy, republic and the Constitution. Trump is not only abusing his office for personal gain but also challenging our democracy, the rule of law and the separation of powers. Loss of liberty is too high a price to pay for this trial to fail and permit the perpetrator, and any future presidents, to abuse their powers.

To avoid an failure of the Republican-controlled Senate to indict, I propose the House adopt and vote on articles of impeachment, then table any action rather than forwarding to the Senate. During this tabled period, the House can continue to investigate Trump’s other violations of the Constitution and examine the potential for additional articles of impeachment, while continuing to inform the public.

The House can withhold submission of the articles to the Senate until after the 2020 election.
