Letter to the editor:

Majority has rejected Trump

Fri, Feb 22, 2019 (2 a.m.)

Contrary to President Donald Trump’s unfounded belief, this is the “United” States of America, the Constitution of which promises liberty and justice for all, which except for the antiquated Electoral College mandates government by majority rule.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump portrayed himself as the ultimate deal maker who would get Mexico to pay for his border wall. But he failed to do so. As president for 23 months, he had a Republican majority in both the House and Senate to secure funding for the border wall, but once again he failed to do so.

Trump is a lousy deal maker who resorts to fear mongering about a nonexistent emergency to support nationalistic and xenophobic goals. This is born out by his national approval rating of only 44 percent, 43 percent approval for the border wall and 55 percent disapproval of the same.

Why should Americans pay for a wall most disapprove of, which is being promoted by a president who is not supported by a majority of Americans?

Americans must speak out and fight against complacency, as this is not democracy but an all-too-obvious attempt by Trump to buy votes by placating his base.

Author Yuval Noah Harari said it best: “Human wisdom is very powerful, but we should never underestimate human stupidity.”
