Motorcyclist, off-duty officer both at fault in fatal crash, NHP says

Wed, Jan 23, 2019 (7:15 p.m.)

An off-duty Metro Police officer and a motorcyclist who was killed in a southwest valley crash earlier this month were both at fault, the Nevada Highway Patrol said today.

Footage of the crash was captured on a dash camera filmed by a bystander.

The motorcyclist, Charles Kirkling, 34, was going about 60 mph, double the speed limit, while he and the officer — who was in a civilian car — both entered the intersection against a red light, officials determined.

No charges have been filed, officials said.

First responders were called about 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 12 to Mountains Edge Parkway and Buffalo Drive, officials said.

The Civic was turning north on Buffalo from eastbound Mountains Edge when it was struck by the motorcycle, which was heading west on Mountains Edge, officials said.

Kirkling began a “locked wheel skid” before he crashed onto the right side of the car, officials said.

The crash occurred on a Metro-patrolled road so the Highway Patrol, per a previous agreement, stepped in to help investigate in an effort to maintain transparency, the agency said at the time.
