A fistfight in North Las Vegas early Friday morning left one homeless man dead and another facing a murder charge, according to city police.

Police were notified about a fight in progress at about 2 a.m. near North Main Street and Owens Avenue.

Arriving officers found a gravely injured 23-year-old man, police said. Investigators learned that he and Eddie Jackson, 38, had been fighting when the victim fell to the ground.

Jackson ran, but police soon took him into custody and booked him in the Las Vegas Detention Center on one count of murder, police said.

Police said the victim and Jackson knew each other. Officer Eric Leavitt said both men are transients and that Jackson was initially sedated and hospitalized.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
