An investigation into a domestic dispute in a central valley neighborhood Tuesday night ended when a Metro Police officer shot and killed an armed suspect, Capt. Nichole Splinter said early Wednesday.

Officers responded about 7 p.m. to the 3100 block of Bel Air Drive, near Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn Road, and encountered a female victim, Splinter said.

While police were talking to her and investigating some sort of crime, the suspect — described by Splinter as “extremely irate” — stepped outside armed with a firearm.

The man then pointed the weapon upward, underneath his chin, and for several minutes “verbally challenged the officers, yelling obscenities throughout their interaction,” Splinter said.

It wasn’t clear what happened next, but an officer opened fire multiple times, fatally wounding the suspect, who died at the scene, Splinter said.

The relationship between the man and the woman wasn’t disclosed. No officers were injured, police said.

Further details were expected within 72 hours as Metro policy dictates, Splinter said. This was the eighth Metro-involved shooting this year.
