William Paden had an 80-yard interception return today for the Desert Pines High football team in a 49-14 victory against host Canyon Springs in the Northeast League opener.

Desert Pines surrendered a touchdown at the end of the first half, then closed with 28 unanswered points in remaining undefeated.

“We pulled away in the second half,” Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez said. “We played well offensively. We probably had our best game.”

Jovantae Barnes rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns, Branden Thomas had a 40-yard touchdown, and Deandre Moore scored on a 30-yard reception.

Paden, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior linebacker, is starting to blossom into a defensive force, Rodriguez said. He’s a converted safety with a ton of potential.

“He’s so long and athletic,” Rodriguez said.
