Wyatt Delano rushed for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns today for the Virgin Valley football team, leading the Bulldogs to a 28-19 victory against host Moapa Valley in the Hammer Game rivalry and the 3A Sunrise League title.

“Our offensive line played great,” Virgin Valley coach Matt Woods said. “They blocked so well for Wyatt.”

Meb Hollingshead threw a touchdown to William Barnum in completing 5 of 12 passes for 112 yards, and Wyatt Anderson added a 5-yard touchdown run.

Virgin Valley (8-1 overall, 5-0 in league) certainly could be labeled as a favorite to win the 3A state championship. Just don’t tell that to Woods.

“We are pretty good, but there is a lot we can improve on,” he said. “At this stage of the season, everybody could be called a favorite. We have to keep working hard.”

That work should include prepping for another meeting with Moapa Valley, the perennial power and third-place finisher in the Sunrise. If Moapa Valley wins next week, it would play at Virgin Valley in two weeks for the state quarterfinals.

“Our team is a focused bunch,” Woods said. “Our goal was to win league and win state. Beating Moapa was icing on the cake.”
