Most Desert Pines football games are long decided when the fourth quarter begins.

Yet, Thursday the undefeated Jaguars were in unchartered waters against visiting Legacy — the score was tied at 14-all entering the final 12 minutes.

But Rjay Tagataese connected on a long pass to Deandre Moore to bring the ball into Legacy territory, and Jovantae Barnes scored the winning points on a touchdown run of about 35 yards. The Desert Pines defense did the rest in holding Legacy off the scoreboard for the final 10 minutes.

“We needed to be tested,” Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez said. “It was an ugly game for us. We knew it would be physical and that Legacy would play hard. Those guys always play hard, especially against us.”

Tagataese completed a 7-yard pass to Brandon Thomas for a touchdown, and Barnes had another rushing score for the other Desert Pines points.

“We got tested and found a way to win. They are all not going to be pretty,” Rodriguez said.
