A man in a stolen car was fatally shot by officers after leading them on a high-speed pursuit and attempting to carjack a victim east of the Strip, according to Metro Police.
Authorities spotted a white sedan driving erratically on an unidentified Las Vegas freeway shortly before 2 p.m., Capt. Nichole Splinter said Tuesday evening.
When an officer screened the license plate, it came back stolen, Splinter said. At that point, the driver took off at a “high rate of speed,” driving “extremely erratically,” she added.
With a police helicopter hovering above the sedan, officers clocked its speed above 100 mph, Splinter said.
The driver led officers to an extended stay hotel on 455 E. Twain Ave., police said. There, Splinter said, the man exited the car and approached another car, whose driver was pulling out of the parking lot.
At that point, Splinter said, the suspect pointed a shotgun at the victim. It wasn’t clear what transpired next, but officers opened fire, striking the suspect.
It wasn’t clear if the suspect fired the weapon.
The investigation remained in its preliminary stages Tuesday night, Splinter said.
