Letter to the editor:

We’re hearing echoes of Hitler

Eugene Robinson’s column Feb. 16 column, “How America is becoming a banana republic,” should be required reading for politicians of every persuasion.

I think of 1930s Germany after the “Night of the Long Knives” when Adolf Hitler sent Nazi thugs to murder his political enemies. No evidence, no trials, no defense, but an explanation: Nervously, he told the Reichstag, “At that moment I was the law.”

He sold it. Even common workers from that moment joked, “He took away our freedom to starve.” The courts were stacked with Nazis.

Germans were led by a lunatic.
