A wildfire that’s been burning for just over a week in the Spring Mountains outside Las Vegas is now 95 percent contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The burn area covered 2,758 acres between Kyle and Lee canyons, but the fire activity was minimal, officials said.

Firefighting resources that are no longer needed were being released, officials said. Two helicopters will remain available to drop water on the blaze, officials said.

Dead standing trees, holes in the ground filled with ash and steep, rocky terrain present safety hazards for firefighters, officials said. Because of that, unburned trees and vegetation will be allowed to burn in the interior fire area, officials said.

“Firefighters will continue to monitor these interior islands to assure they do not pose a threat to containment lines,” a Forest Service news release said.

The fire started June 28 near the Mahogany Grove Campground and is believed to have been started by people, officials said.
