Elderly man suffers smoke inhalation in duplex fire

An elderly man was taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation Thursday night after a fire at a duplex north of downtown Las Vegas, according to the city fire department.

The fire was reported about 8:15 p.m. in the 800 Block of Balzar Avenue. Flames were coming from a bedroom window at the rear of the home, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters found the man on the ground in front of the duplex, officials said. A caller told dispatchers he had been pulled from the home, officials said.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $25,000, officials said.

In a separate incident, a blaze that started in several palm trees spread to a house in the 100 block of North 19th Street, near Fremont and Bruce streets, officials said.

Nobody was injured.

The fire, which was reported about 9:20 p.m. Thursday, destroyed the trees and did about $5,000 damage, mainly to the outside of the house, officials said.

The cause of the fire could not be determined, officials said.
