A 1-year-old boy was killed Sunday night when the car he was riding in was severed in two after colliding with another vehicle and hitting a sign, Metro Police said.

The crash happened about 7:15 p.m. on Rampart Boulevard, just north of Lake Mead Boulevard.

A Hyundai Sonata was headed north at “a high rate of speed” when it collided with a Nissan Sentra that was making a right turn from Lake Mead onto Rampart, police said. The Hyundai hit a "marquee sign," severing the right side of the car, police said.

The child, a passenger in the Hyundai, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His name was not released, pending notification of family members.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 23-year-old Las Vegas woman, and the driver of the Nissan, a 36-year-old Las Vegas woman, suffered only minor injuries, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
