RENO — A police dog with UNR that specialized in detecting explosives has died.

Bonnie was sniffing for evidence related to a shooting when she was struck by a vehicle after walking into the roadway, the university said. She was taken to an animal hospital where she died Thursday.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart and a lot of emotion that we lost our fellow officer, friend and family member, Bonnie,” said the university's police Chief Todd Renwick.

Bonnie, a black Labrador, worked with Officer Tom Emmons for nearly six years. He has said she had a way of “stealing your heart at first contact.” At home, Bonnie loved to play with squeak toys, he said.

The school's police force now has only one K-9 — Sapa.
