LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

This corruption must be rebuked

Tue, Jul 21, 2020 (2 a.m.)

It seems that every Friday, the Trump administration, in a cowardly attempt to avoid maximum publicity, announces another scandalous decision by President Donald Trump. On July 10, it announced the commutation of Roger Stone’s sentence for lying to Congress about Trump’s criminal liability.

In response, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, exhibited courage in calling the commutation an act of “historic and unprecedented corruption,” while Democratic members of Congress referred to it as “appalling” and “despicable.” And why not?

Every grade-school child knows that there are three co-equal branches of the government (judicial, legislative and executive), and that the Constitution imposes on the president and Congress the joint duty to establish justice and provide for the common defense and general welfare of this nation.

So what does it say about Trump that he would work against a co-equal branch of government in a case that attempted to cover up his criminality? This was a bridge too far for even disgraced former President Richard Nixon to take.

Nov. 3 is fastly approaching and as New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra was fond of saying, “it’s getting late early.” Will any other Republican member of Congress grow a backbone like Romney and stand up for what’s right?
