ELKO — Authorities say a Winnemucca police detective who was found dead in an evidence vault last month died from a drug overdose.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen announced Tuesday that lab tests concluded 47-year-old Matt Morgan ingested two illegally controlled substances.

Morgan had been found June 25 with a bag containing a white, powdery substance.

A Washoe County crime lab determined Morgan had taken Fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Allen said there no signs of foul play or suicide. The Humboldt County District Attorney's Office will review the case.

Morgan had been with the Winnemucca Police Department since 1994. According to an old campaign website from when he ran for justice of the peace in 2018, he served on a drug task force.

Winnemucca Police Chief Dave Garrison said an audit of the evidence vault found one item that had been tampered with. An independent Nevada National Guard unit found there was no sign of any chemical or biological hazard in the vault.
