LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

If he loses, mute Trump’s mic

Fri, Jul 24, 2020 (2 a.m.)

As a former journalist, I get it: The media doesn’t have much choice; he is the leader of the free world; when he speaks, tweets, rants and raves, you have to cover it. It is your job.

Whether it’s television, newspapers or social media, there is nothing fake about this president’s domination of the media. Donald Trump has turned Twitter into his state-run news outlet. Since taking office, he has tweeted countless thousands of times. Sadly, these nonsensical, divisive rants have become the hallmark of his presidency.

During the coronavirus pandemic and protests for justice following the murder of George Floyd at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, Trump proved he is incapable of consoling a nation. In fact, his racially charged oratory was compared by many to throwing gasoline on the fires that burned across the country.

But after November, if he is not reelected, I am asking, begging and imploring the media to mute Trump. No more bully pulpit for the biggest bully the presidency has ever known. No more ratings for the former president who ran the country like a reality show. Let’s tune him out and give ourselves a well deserved break from his hate-filled rhetoric.
