Las Vegas DUI suspect had 5 unrestrained kids in car, police say

A man was booked on 15 counts over the weekend, including DUI and allowing child endangerment, after officers found an open beer and five unrestrained children in his unregistered vehicle, according to Metro Police and court records.

Deshawn Charles Miller was pulled over Saturday night during a “DUI blitz” that led to the arrest of 23 other impaired drivers, and 71 citations after 219 car stops, Metro’s traffic unit announced on Twitter.

Officers spotted an unregistered vehicle and stopped Miller near Lamb and Las Vegas boulevards, according to his arrest report.

Inside, police found five unrestrained children in the back — ages 2 to 12 — and an open 24-ounce can of beer that was cold to the touch with alcohol missing in the front center console.

The back seat only had three seat belts, though none of the children was wearing one, police said.

Police said Miller, who they allege had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol, became argumentative when he was told he was under arrest.

He claimed to have only consumed two beers, police said. He failed sobriety tests and declined to be breathalyzed or voluntarily provide a blood sample, which was obtained through a warrant, according to the arrest report.

The report didn’t indicate if officers had obtained the blood test results.

Miller was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count each of DUI, driving without a valid license, open alcohol container, no proof of insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle, according to Las Vegas Justice Center logs. He’s also facing five counts each of allowing child abuse or neglect, and child restraint violation.

All 15 counts are misdemeanors or gross misdemeanors, logs show. He walked out of jail on his own recognizance Sunday and was ordered to “follow any CPS directives, if any.”

The next court hearing was scheduled for November.

"When your priorities are not what they should,” Metro wrote on Twitter after the arrest. “Five kids, ages 2-12, were unrestrained in the car while this parent was driving impaired!!! #WakeUp #WhenDoWeLearn.”
