Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co., the parent company of Allegiant Air, has announced it will eliminate more than 200 positions.

The company will cut about 220 positions, primarily from administrative areas, according to an email Monday from Allegiant President John Redmond to employees. Most of the positions are vacant, but 87 workers face layoff, officials said.

Laid-off workers will be paid through September and will receive medical benefits through the end of the year, Redmond said.

“Difficult choices have been made in order to cut costs and preserve liquidity,” Redmond said. “Today, more people are flying, but recent increases in COVID-19 cases have chilled our momentum in bookings.”

Before the announced cuts, Allegiant had about 4,500 employees, including close to 1,500 in Las Vegas.
