LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t expect a dignified exit

Sat, Nov 28, 2020 (2 a.m.)

We are more than three weeks removed from the presidential election won decisively by Joe Biden, as the Electoral College stands firm at 306-232. Rudy Giuliani’s legal freak show has been found meritless, while the president plays victim, maniacally tweeting spurious allegations.

To be clear, legitimate allegations of voter fraud should be investigated. But to date over two dozen allegations across multiple states have been dismissed or withdrawn for lack of evidence. This masquerade will almost certainly continue until Dec. 8, whereupon, per federal law, state certifications of ballots will be completed. Shortly thereafter, the individual state electors will complete their “certificates of vote,” and subsequently send them to the president of the Senate, Vice President Mike Pence, by Dec. 23. Finally, on Jan. 6, a joint session of Congress will tabulate the votes. Biden will then be declared our 46th president. Democracy will move forward.

Having said that, and knowing this president’s penchant for theatrical ego massaging, he may well consider conducting a rally on White House grounds, rage to the assembled, blame the coronavirus on China, curse fake news, claim he was robbed and indignantly exit stage right to finish his presidency sulking in his Mar-a- Lago bunker.

Donald Trump will never concede. I doubt he will display the patriotic dignity, regard for office or respect to our nation to shake the hand of our 46th president and wish him well, as every other president has done since George Washington.
