The annual fireworks display that lights up the Strip on New Year’s Eve has been canceled this year because of coronavirus safety concerns, tourism officials said today.

People can instead look forward to “some special things planned to welcome 2021,” Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in a statement. He did not elaborate.

Hill said the decision was made with safety in mind.

“Las Vegas has always been a bucket list New Year’s Eve destination, and we are going to make sure that remains the case,” Hill said. “The safety and security of our guests and employees is our top priority, and with that in mind, we will not have a fireworks show on Dec. 31.”

The pandemic has led to the cancellation of Las Vegas events from shows to concerts, sports contests, festivals and conventions.
