Google has vowed to double its $600 million investment in its Henderson data center, which is under construction since last year, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development announced Wednesday.
“We’re thrilled to announce the expansion of our data center investment in the city of Henderson,” said Google official Andrew Silvestri in a news release. “We’ve loved calling Henderson home since July 2019, and we’re grateful to … the City Council for their continued partnership, which is enabling the growth of our presence there.”
In November 2018, the office of economic development, under then Gov. Brian Sandoval, approved the arrival of the data center, located on West Warm Springs near Boulder Highway.
Construction crews broke ground last year. Once the center is operational, Google will hire at least 50 full-time employees, who each will earn an average of $65,000 a year.
Design LLC, a subsidiary of Google, will own the facility, while Google will manage it. Originally, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company was granted tax breaks of about $25 million over a 20-year period. During that time, the company would still pay more than $85 million in taxes.
It wasn’t clear if the terms will change.
The data center will support Google cloud computing and other services, such as Google, YouTube and Gmail.
Google operates centers like the one in Henderson in the U.S. and abroad.
“With this latest announcement, Google will bring their total investment in the city of Henderson to $1.2 billion,” said Mayor Debra March in the release. “We are excited to see them grow both as a community partner and as an employer of high-quality technology jobs in Henderson.”
