LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

A wish can’t manage a crisis

Sun, Sep 20, 2020 (2 a.m.)

When confronted with the forest fires in the West, President Donald Trump continued to insist that these fires were the fault of governors who did not sufficiently sweep the floors of these forests. He actually threatened to withhold federal funds for their failure to do the sweeping or for failure to support him politically.

When confronted with his stand on global warming, Trump assured those in attendance that the world would get cooler, “just wait.”

When confronted with the pandemic, Trump has continued to insist that people would simply stop getting infected, any day now.

Trump’s consistent message for any problem is simply to wish it away — wish away the North Korean threat, the global warming threat, the forest fires, the floods in the Midwest, the pandemic, the economic crisis.

Why waste time planning or acting to mitigate any damages? After all, there is much TV to watch, only so much time for tweeting, and only so many hours in the day for golf. Call it ignorance, call it laziness, call it “I just don’t care.” It doesn’t matter what you call it, it amounts to the same thing. Trump does nothing except feed his own personal appetite.
