For the past week, the UNLV basketball roster has decreased seemingly by the day, with players exiting the program.

Now, new coach Kevin Kruger appears to have an addition.

Jordan McCabe, a 6-foot guard with 94 career games at West Virginia, announced on social media that he is transferring to UNLV.

The UNLV roster will feature many new faces next season as Kruger will dip into the NCAA transfer portal to quickly remake the team. Getting backcourt help, which UNLV desperately lacked last season, was a top priority.

McCabe, who will have two years of eligibility at UNLV, fell out of favor at West Virginia. He went from leading them in assists in 2018-19 to averaging only 11 minutes per game this past season. He has 48 career starts but only four in 2020-21 — hence the transfer.

His numbers aren’t eye-popping at just 2.2 points and 1.4 assists per game in 2020-21. But he averaged 2.5 assists per game as a freshman against Big 12 Conference competition, and he could be an impact player in the Mountain West with a fresh start at UNLV.

McCabe is originally from Kaukauna, Wisconsin, where he was the state’s high school player of the year in 2018 after averaging 26.7 points and 7.8 assists per game.

Expect more transfers in the upcoming days, especially with the hundreds of collegiate players in the portal.

The UNLV roster has only a handful of holdovers in Marvin Coleman, Nick Blake, Moses Wood and Reece Brown. Bryan Hamilton declared Wednesday for the NBA but didn’t hire an agent and can return. Senior post Mbacke Diong could take the past season as a free COVID eligibility year and return.

It’s unknown if high school recruits Arthur Kaluma and Keshon Gilbert, who signed with former coach T.J. Otzelberger, will stay committed to the new staff. High school prospects, after a coaching change, are allowed to reopen their recruitment.
